Water Colour is a powder to which you just add water. Each shade is made from the same blend of active powder base with different proportions of pigment to formulate each individual shade. The following ingredients form the base of all shades:

1. Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate is a highly effective, well researched and very safe detergent powder. This can be used in any task requiring the removal of natural oils from the skin and hair and so you could find it also in shower and body wash, hand wash and bubble bath formulations.

We use this for its thickening and degreasing effect and its ability to create excellent foam. By all environmental (green), purity and safety standards this is the perfect ingredient. This ingredient scores the highest score of 100 on the bio-renewable carbon index and is also and ingredient of such internally used products as toothpaste and enemas.

2. Sodium Percarbonate is a powder that once mixed with water provides a weak source of active oxygen. Active oxygen is required to produce the series of reactions to create the myriad of dye shades achievable. Sodium percarbonate is perfectly stable and in the low concentrations required here, no hair damage or hair lightening occurs whatsoever. Sodium percarbonate has a safety rating of 0.

3. Sodium Lauroyl Sarcostinate is derived from sarcosine, a natural amino acid that forms the building blocks of many living things, both animal and vegetable. In this case, vegetable derived sarcostinate has been used as an ultra-safe, ultra-mild foaming agent combined with sodium dodecyl sulphate. Sodium Lauroyl sarcostinate has a safety rating of 4.

4. Silica is a natural inert mineral obtained from sand. Its inclusion helps to keep the powder dry. Silica has a safety rating of 0.

5. Sodium Silicate and water act as a dye fixative for Water Colour. Water Colour works in a mildly alkaline pH and sodium silicate enables the dyes within to react with the outer layers of the hair's fibre. After the dye is applied it is covered with a plastic cap to retain water moisture, then left to process for about 35 to forty minutes at room temperature. Sodium Silicate has a safety rating of 3.

6. Sodium Sulphate helps in "levelling". This means that it helps to reduce negative charges on hair fibre so that the dyes can penetrate evenly at these mild pH levels. Sodium sulphate has a safety rating of 1.

7. Xanthan Gum is a natural gum derived from sugar used here to keep the mixed product thick enough not to separate once the foam subsides. Xanthan gum has a safety rating of 0.
